2018 | Urban Analysis + Design

This project was a studio collaboration with Deltares, an independent institute for applied research in the field of water subsurface based in Delft, Holland. My approach implemented a traditional wetland system to create both high functioning ecosystems and urban areas. Our project scale consisted of the Markermeer and all of it’s adjacent ecosystems. Students were invited to respond to the surrounding ecosystem, through new and innovative methods that would revitalize the failing Markermeer. For this project I decided to bring the techniques of Aztec gardening to the ultra modern landscape of The Netherlands. While researching the ancient Mesoamerican technique of floating gardens, I decided to build off of this low tech proven method because of its ability to stand the test of time. Chinampas would become wetland environments for farming and wildlife preservation.
